You're Boss Does What?

An alternative to a familiar bumper sticker:

My Boss Is A Jewish Carpenter:

A few days ago i was having a conversation with my friend B. Inspired by this post. I was arguing that it doesn't make sense for mainstream Christians to have a bumper sticker proclaiming "My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter." He claimed that it's just another funny way of saying, "I believe in Jesus" for all Christians not just Jews for Jesus. I found it weird that Christians would want to be reminded of their Jewish roots. But doing some further research it turns out B. was right.

* B. 's joke, which was originally funnier.

Fish Are People Too....Oh Wait...

It's been a long time since i agreed with my sister, vremyavpered, on an issue that concerns laws/politics/government (which makes me sad, since we used to agree much more in the past). So it made me really happy when i clicked on Alisa's post about a new "progressive" law being passed in Rome, Italy and saw my sister arguing against the moronic idea of passing legislation banning fish bowls on the basis of it being a cruel practice. Let me repeat that, if you own a fish bowl with a gold fish in it you are considered a criminal in Rome.

Tag or Meme or....

...Petitedov is too lazy to write anything of substance (after Wednesday, if anyone cares, this should change).

Seldom Sober tagged me with this peculiar meme . Here it goes:

1. Go into your archives.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Post the fifth sentence (or closest to it).
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
5. Tag five other people to do the same thing.

My twenty third post is titled. I'm Back In The USSR

My sentence: The thirty hours of traveling weren't so bad, just a bit horrible.

I like to think this sentence highlights my writing style in general: bad grammar, poor logic, and too many italicized/all capital words to express exasperation or my sardonic "wit."

I kind of liked this meme since it lets people who started reading a blog medias res to see what the person was writing before and if they have changed. I find it if the blog is old enough you might just discover a whole different person than the one you come to know from recent posts.

I tag the usual suspects, specifically because i haven't read their blogs from the inception: Writersbloc (because this is another way not to feel guilty for not seeing her ever), Gib (i saw the inception of Montoya Awards...i wonder what else this man was up to), Murph (because he said he likes these things), Jessica (because someone needs to update more regularly, ahem), and Yaron (who although going soft at his old age still commands my respect).

Pet Peeve: How Shows Deal With Unwanted Pregnancy

It's the same g.d. thing every time: a woman has an unwanted pregnancy. She decided on an abortion. Then two things happen:

a) this is classic: she miscarries, cries for two minutes and then realizes that her life can resume with greater appreciation for not being pregnant anymore. (I'm looking at you Grey's Anatomy and Party of Five)

b) She goes to the clinic, decides she can't go through with it and has the baby (Hello Sex in the City). Oh, and the baby has this transforming quality that will save the woman's life from X sin/vice.

Both are cop-outs. If you want to portray a character who has an abortion then do so. If you want to emphasize how complex the issue is then do so. Don't try to appease both sides because people get irritated and turn the television off. Take a damn stance!

Can someone name a show in recent memory that portrayed a woman going through an actual abortion?

Dismissal of the Week Borrowed from Murph

David Denby of The New Yorker on Elizabethtown:

At times, the movie became so boring that I experienced the uncanny sensation that I could physically feel the film passing through the projector. As I counted sprocket holes, my sense of what the movie was “about” simply dissolved, and the projector threw onto the screen meaningless images of children screaming, a memorial service going awry, landscapes unfurling outside a car window.

Best Great Aunt Ever

I was feeling out of sorts a while ago. So for a Rosh Hashanah my Great Aunt gave homemade lemon vodka as a present to cheer me up. Sometimes you lose with family and sometimes you win. This was definitely a winning situation.

Mooooooovies!

* I bought tickets to see Sarah Silverman and her film Jesus is Magic at the Coolidge Corner Theater on Nov 3rd. Yay.

* I also got tickets to see my favorite fallen angel and disheveled detective Columbo Peter Falk (you know the guy draws/paints for a hobby?) in Checking Out. I don't know how good the movie will be but i'll get to meet Peter Falk! (Seriously, the only other celebrity i would be as excited about would be Christopher Walken. We here at Petitedov are not big on celebrities.)

* Both films are part of the Boston Jewish Film Festival. (Almost interned there. )

* Murph has an excellent review of Good Night and Good Luck and he also has some disturbing news about Rocky....time to bring back my favorite clip. I hope they are not serious.

*The legendary Brattle Theater in Harvard Square is facing an uphill battle of raising $400,000 by the end of the year or it might close its doors for good. This cannot happen. However, could the management have warned us about this earlier?

* I really need to go see a movie in a theater ASAP.

Little Changes - Heads Up

I did what all the cool kids are doing and switched to a gmail account.

Also i've been trying a new way to respond to comments (i upgraded haloscan acct. - yay!) So if you left a comment i probably will answer with bold type. I stole this technique shamelessly from Lola.

Arrogance

Has this ever happened to any people who read/write blogs? You hear something on the radio or get one of those "funny" forwards and you think to yourself: "Dude i saw/read it like two weeks ago....get with the times." Sometimes i feel so current with news/pop events that i want to say to someone "i read it on a blog already" ....but i never do, people already suspect i'm a dweeb. I don't need to give them anymore arsenal.

Not So Random Thought

More and more i realize how hard it is to perform a task you don't believe in. To fake your thoughts and feelings. I never imagined the drain can be so huge.

Been there (sort of) done that!

Heh.

Got 5 Bucks?

Jessica is getting up at 6:30 in the morning on Sunday to ride for sixty miles in the MS Bike Tour. It's a great cause and Jessica just needs to raise $50 more dollars. So if you can, please consider supporting this great event.

The Next CD I'm Buying Is...

I Am A Bird Now by Antony and the Johnsons. I heard snippets of the cd on NPR this morning and instantly fell in love. Apparently i'm kind of late on this bandwagon of accolades, but what i heard this morning was so gorgeous, familiar and yet new that i can't stop thinking about. Thus the blog. He crosses gospel like music with rock/punk. Oh and lucky New Yorkers he is playing at Carnegie Hall on Thursday.

You Got To Love Bucky! (I love P.E.T.A. too but with falafel!)

(click on the picture to make it bigger)

Okay so my joke isn't that funny since falafel isn't made from animals, but Bucky is funny, he's the cat.

Question

When the bottle says "cough suppressant" shouldn't it, you know...suppress coughs!?

Islam, Koran, Bombs

I can't believe i found this article on the Huffington Post but here it is. Sam Harris argues there is a direct link between Islam and suicide bombers. Then he got some unpleasant reactions which he answers here. I had a friend who when i would try to criticize Islam in any way would call a brainwashed Zionist and letting me know over and over again that it was a religion of peace. You know because he took, not only one, but TWO classes about Islam.

Hablo Dreams?

I've been having extremely weird dreams lately. Half of which i don't remember and which leave me confused and a bit spooked. However, there is one weird theme through all of them. At some point someone speaks to me in Spanish. I assure them that i don't speak Spanish and then they make me feel bad for taking French in high school and not learning a "second langauge" properly. Then they continure to barade me in Spanish. I don't get it.

Dog Loving

This weekend i was delegated to watch a friend's dog. Being a bit miserable and sick dampened my spirits on the whole enterprise, but not by much. After two days of sulking the doggy decided to finally join me in the computer room and lie behind me,licking every inch of himself, and sometimes resting his head on my lap.
I also found it somewhat gratifying to tell the pizza guy, that i will be back after walking "my dog". That's as good as, or if not better than, saying "my boyfriend." I felt slightly elated but also embarrassed.

If Only He Knew....

After a long coughing fit in my Jewish film class i joked with my professor that obviously i was being punished for my sins early this year (Yom Kippur being next week). To which my school friend Sasha said, without a note of irony, "Petitedov, you don't have any sins to worry about." Um ya, from Sasha's mouth to G-d ears.

Sharing Time

A while back i had a chance to watch the documentary River and Tides, a film about Andy Goldworthy. He is a Scottish artist that works with nature to create his art - stones, leaves, flowers, branches, icicles - are his canvas. The film lets you see the painstaking long process that each art project requires and tries to delve (rather unsuccessfully) into Goldworthy's mind. It gives one a deeper appreciation for each finished work. The pieces he makes are visually astounding, i was especially impressed with his use of color in nature. I guess most of his art is about the transient nature of life - but you know a lot of it is quite beautiful just to look at on its own.

Friday

On my daily run to the store
i passed a squirrel
gasping, kicking, convulsing -
not able to shake off the epileptic seizure
gripping its heart (or mine)

On returning home, with the usual
fare, the sunset's light silvered the
mourning dress of the crow. His fountain
pen drawing the bloody ink -
from the fragile carcass by the side of the road.

For a second i stilled my breath,
driving on, unable to stand death.

I guess this is not quite the appropriate poem for the start of the new year, but i'm not in a great mood. I wrote this poem as a melodramatic freshman in college. I forget which poet i was trying to copy. I always sucked at poetry.

Miers Pulls a Cheney.

So Harriet Miers was heading the search committee for Bush's next Supreme Court nominee. Guess that's one way of getting nominated. I think there's a trend here.

I Am A Blogger

Last night re-affirmed my belief in alcohol and in little black dresses. Met some people i've been happy to meet before and some new people (damn you people who don't have blogs) as well. I met a man named Joshua Caleb - supposedly two characters, Joshua and Caleb, in the Torah that were the only scouts that believed Jerusalem could be conquered by the Jews led by Moses. The fact that this guys name is Joshua Caleb was pure coincidence on the part of his parents - you learn something new everyday. Some tv/film talk was had (please rent The Aristocrats, don't see it in the theatre) , some ideas about new blogs was tossed around, Eliott Smith murder/sucide debate were explored, and i even got some NYC history in the mix. Overall a great evening although one that should have ended with a taxi and not with the metro and me cursing at being a girl and wearing high heels. Damn social constructs!

Theory....

I think one can tell a lot about a person by the kind of toilet paper they own. Yes. Toilet paper. It's a tell tale sign.
